OLD + NEW

Below are two sets of wooden blocks I came across recently: [01] Community Workers Blocks I found at a local Brooklyn thrift store and [02] Babel Blocks for sale at the NYC design store, Moss (each "block character" has its own MySpace page). Times have changed.

NICE VIEW

This is an early Sawyer's hand lettered, 3D View-Master reel [No. 319: Banff Nat'l Park, CANADA, Lake Louise, circa 1940] from a former employee of the Portland Oregon Sawyer's View-Master plant. Nice handwriting.

"abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz" is a film by Roel & Job Wouters. Job and his nephew Gradus (4 yrs. old) are very ambitious with letters. Spontanious jam sessions in their studio inspired them to make this video. Directed by his brother Roel.

B*MINE

My friends over at kate spade have pooled together their favorite designers and had them make handmade valentines to share with you. Send one of these to someone you like. Happy Valentine's Day.

LA CUISINE

La cuisine est un jeu d’enfants by Michel Oliver [1963] was an impromptu gift from my good friends, Erik and Jessica. Whenever they have us over for dinner, they always share their recent book finds. This one didn't fit in their shelf, so they gave it to me -- nice.

NYPL

In December, I went to a lecture at the New York Public Library on Czech book design. While I was there, I popped into the exhibit "Beautific Soul: Jack Kerouac on the Road." Shown are 6 fantasy baseball team cards he made in pencil and crayon on thick card [ca. 1953-56].
