VACATION

I'm off for the next week and a half. First to L.A., then to Calgary, then on to Victoria, B.C., and then back east to Nantucket. I hope to find some new and old items to share when I return.

ROO-SHAY

A painter, printmaker, and filmmaker, Edward Ruscha is known for for his paintings incorporating words and phrases and for his many photographic books, influenced by the deadpan irreverence of the Pop Art movement.

TV TEXT

Jenny Holzer’s TV Texts represent ambivalent messages dynamically directed at a vanishing point which lies beyond the viewer’s retina. The messages are placed within brackets of white noise. Take a look.

23 year old Tauba Auerbach lives in San Francisco and works as a sign painter. Her work deals with the shortcomings and possibilities of language. “I feel as though I know each letter intimately — its shortcomings and its tendencies. I feel close to them.”

FALL OH-SEVEN

I bought a copy of the September issue of Vogue magazine (all 870 pages) yesterday. Inside I found the Kate Spade Fall advertising campaign (my last project at Kate Spade), shot by the very talented Cig Harvey. Enjoy.

VARIATION

This is Frank Stella's lithograph titled Sinjerli Variation I (1977) from an edition/set of 100. Pencil signed, numbered and dated. 81 cm x 107.7 cm.

TAKE-OUT

This is a clip of Andy Warhol eating a cheeseburger from what appears to be Burger King. A big fan of burgers, I couldn't help myself with this one (watch the first few seconds and not the whole 4 minutes).

VISIONAIRE *20

This was given to me as a gift several years ago. It is VISIONAIRE NO. 20: COMME DES GARCONS (1997) edited by Rei Kawakubo, who selected 13 fashion photographers (including Bruce Weber, Philip-Lorca DiCorcia, Karl Lagerfeld) to document her favorite pieces from the previous 12 years. Included is a dress pattern by Ms. Kawakubo.

Paperpursuits.com is a great online resource for vintage fashion and design print collectibles including vintage Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, couturier patterns, fashion ads and books.

RELATED ART II

This is a 1930 flapper fashion scrapbook kept by Zelma Palmer for her Related Art II class, dated December 3, 1930. The pages have clippings from magazines and pencil hand-writing describing complexion combinations; the lines of an outfit; neckline styles; proportion; emphasis and color harmonics.

A FANZINE

Stella #4, is a Fanzine by Nadja Aebi, Nicole Bachmann and Maja Tackett with contributors Patricia Bucher, Alice Cantaluppi Anneliese Coste, Judith Düsberg, Kyle Field, Florian Germann, Marica Gojevic, Véronique Hoegger, Katja Jug, Koichi Tabata, Sandi Kozjek, Elke aus dem Moore. This issue includes CD with poems and songs.

MUSIC TEMPO

Two 1959 issues of Music Tempo Magazine with Luke Gordon and Wanda Jackson on the covers. There are 20 pages of articles on current stars and some printed songsheets of current hits. A nice homemade looking vintage magazine for the music aficionado.

GRAPHIC DESIGNS

This is another find by J.P. Williams. I believe this came from France. A clever, little booklet of manipulated quadrille pages. The early pages start out with very subtle alterations to the lines and as you get through the book they get more and more exaggerated.

INDEX CARD

I use index cards to jot down notes, thoughts, and lists. This is one of the many that I use daily. Another graph themed item that is pretty inexpensive courtesy of Staples.
